Our third press release
This one went out last weekend.
---------------
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Amy Carlton, 773-388-9243, diytrunkshow@gmail.com
The DIY Trunk Show III:
Chicago Helps Gulf Coast Crafters
CHICAGO (October 22, 2005)--A raffle at this year's DIY Trunk Show will benefit the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (www.craftemergency.org), a nonprofit organization that provides financial help to craft artists affected by career-threatening emergencies, such as the recent hurricanes. Nearly two dozen of the Chicago area's finest alternative crafters are donating their work to help their Gulf Coast counterparts.
"The people who will benefit from CERF's help run small craft businesses, just like our own," says Cinnamon Cooper, DIY Trunk Show co-organizer and owner/proprietor of Poise.cc, her own pursemaking business in Rogers Park. "We want to do whatever we can to help them get back on their feet."
Raffle prizes include jewelry, clothing, body care products, stationery and more. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 11 for $10 and will be available for purchase at the DIY Trunk Show, Saturday Nov. 5, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission to the DIY Trunk Show is free, but donations for CERF will be accepted at the door.
The DIY Trunk Show, now in its third year, will showcase the work of more than 85 Chicago-area artists and crafters in a daylong bazaar at Chicago’s Pulaski Park Fieldhouse. Plus, the DIY Trunk Show is the only alternative craft fair in town that lets you shop for handmade goods AND learn craft-making techniques from local instructors. Shoppers can participate in free and low-cost workshops during the day to learn new skills. Scheduled workshops include:
10:00 am – Noon: Collage, taught by Ellen Gradman of Spark Your Art (free)
Noon – 2:00 pm: Chainmaille jewelry, taught by Rebeca Mojica of Blue Buddha Boutique ($2 materials fee)
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Knitting, taught by members of Chicago's Stitch and Bitch chapter (free)
Kitchen Chicago, a local co-op professional kitchen, will be selling a variety of goods made by entrepreneurial gourmands. Beverages, snacks, and more substantial offerings will be available for hungry shoppers during the show.

Workshops
Last year we had a wonderful success with the knitters of Stitch'n'Bitch who taught dozens of people who to knit as well as helping experienced knitters overcome hurdles so they could finish projects they'd already started.
We're committed to supporting the entire crafting community, from the knitter who buys their first pair of needles to the ceramicist who takes out a loan for a kiln. And to encourage more budding crafters, we'll have even more workshops this year.
10am to noon: Ellen Gradman of Spark Your Art will providing tips and techniques for collage work. She'll have examples of her own artwork on hand for sale as well as to server as examples of how versatile this form can be. You can participate from 10am to noon on the stage in the auditorium. This is a free seminar.
noon to 2pm: Rebeca Mojica of Blue Buddha Boutique will be demonstrating some basic chainmaille techniques and demonstrating how to make a pair of earrings. She teaches classes throughout the city so if you've considered taking one, come get a taste for what you can learn. The demonstration is free to watch, however if you'd like to make a pair of earrings, Rebeca is requesting $2 to cover the cost of materials needed to make the earrings. There will be three demos. 12:00 - 12:30, 12:45 - 1:15, and 1:30 - 2:00. Due to a limited supply of pliers she will have enough materials for 10 people to take each session. Since the early bird gets the worm, feel free to sign up for a session in the comments. If there are still openings available the day of the show, Rebeca will let people sign up then. The $2 supplies fee can be given to Rebeca before your session starts.
2pm to 4pm: Stitch'n'Bitch Chicago members will be teaching the earliest beginners how to knit as well as providing "stitch doctor" advice for more advanced knitters who need help deciphering a pattern or assistance in more advanced techniques. These classes will be free but you're encouraged to bring your needles, yarn, and a pattern.

Raffle Relief
Howdy, kids and crafters! My name is Lacey, I'm a local graphic designer and past participant in the Trunk Show. This year, I'm helping out with a brand-new feature of the Trunk Show: the raffle! Because this show is also now about giving back, we're inviting all Trunk Show participants to donate items that will be raffled to raise money for the fabulous Craft Emergency Relief Fund, or CERF.
As you know, there have been a plethora of rather horrible natural disasters in our part of the globe this year. In particular, Hurricane Katrina destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in Misissippi, Louisiana, and elsewhere in the region. This has displaced millions of people, including crafters who make their livelihoods from their talent. According to CERF's website, "Donations to CERF's Disaster Relief Fund are used to provide financial assistance to craft artists affected by career-threatening emergencies such as Hurricane Katrina." The money raised in the Trunk Show's raffle will be sent along to CERF.
The following participants have already stepped up to the plate:
Mint Boutique (gift certificate)
Bazaar Bizarre Books (BB is a Boston/LA alternative craft fair, like a DIY Trunk Show for the coasts)
Kiku (necklace and earring set)
Girl Metro
Sheriff Peanut (bib)
Poise.cc (bag)
Loosetooth
Boxspring Creative (box of 10 cards)
Weener Ware
We'd like to have about 10 more items to raffle. If you want your name/item(s) to be on this list, I'll be keeping track of who's-donating-what. Please contact me, lay-c [at] lay-c.com and I'll add you to the list (my own and then online). It would be great to get a really healthy list to raise the most amount of money possible for CERF's much-needed relief effort.
The day of the show, I'll come by your booth to collect your item(s). Volunteers will be busily selling raffle tickets for $1/each or $10/11 tickets. At the end of the day, we'll draw the names and mail the items to the happy winners!
I'll post again as the time for the show draws nearer, but let me know ASAP if you'd like to participate.
Thanks all! Good luck preparing for the 2005 DIY Trunk Show!

Volunteers needed for DIY Trunk Show 3!
— Comments (6) | Amy
The DIY Trunk Show will need lots of volunteers to help make this year’s show the best in all human history. Duties will include greeting the friendly shoppers, selling raffle tickets, handing out programs, helping vendors set up and tear down, and (most importantly) pointing out the bathrooms.
In order to keep our volunteers from feeling overwhelmed--and give them time to shop--volunteer shifts will be just 2 hours long. The open hours for the show are 10-4, but we'll need a hand before and after as well. Here’s the schedule we’re looking to fill:
9 am - 11 am
1. Ann-Marie G.
2. Naomi M.
3. Rose M.
4. Lynn A.
5. Melissa S.
6. Ashley F.
11 am - 1 pm
1. Crystal P.
2. Lynn
3. Monica A.
4. Cheryl A.
5. Molly B.
1 pm - 3 pm
1. Monica B.
2.
3. Christine M.
4. Elizabeth V.
5. Anna U.
3 pm - 5 pm
1. Rachael H.
2. Paula K.
3. Tam B.
4. Amy H.
5. Erin N.
It's easy! It's fun! It means so much to us! For your troubles, you'll get a cool, limited edition DIY Trunk Show button (they're square!), a discount on the great Kitchen Chicago food at the show, and our undying gratitude.
I’ll update the slots as people volunteer and post them here.
Leave a comment or e-mail Amy at diytrunkshow-at-gmail-dot-com if you’re interested in helping out with the DIY Trunk Show this year. We love you.
