Ephemera: Zine & DIY event at DePaul

Wed, Jul 27 2005Comments (0) | Amy

DIY Trunk Show vendor mintimindi sent us an e-mail about an upcoming show at DePaul:

----------------------------------
EPHEMERA: A D.I.Y. and Zine Festival at DePaul University
Friday September 23, 2005 (12pm – 9pm)
DePaul University Student Center
2250 N. Sheffield, Chicago

D.I.Y. - "do-it-yourself". D.I.Y. culture celebrates the act of making something yourself, not for profit but out of love. D.I.Y. is about expressing creativity and solving problems without hindrance of censorship, and without reliance on wealth or power.

The purpose of EPHEMERA is to recognize and celebrate the D.I.Y. ethic in all its forms. On Friday September 23rd, The DePaul Student Center will showcase local independent media makers and artists, along with guest speakers, zine readings and other events to be announced.

This event is free and open to the public. Artists, writers, self-publishers, teachers, students, activists, and others are encouraged to get involved. Participants will have a chance to present their work, discover new projects and make connections.

Space and time are limited! To inquire about a FREE table, or if you have an idea for a presentation at this event, email Michelle Aiello at ephemera_festival@yahoo.com

Sponsored by Visual Arts Education Program at DePaul University and AREA, Chicago Arts, Education and Activism.

Mint TV appearance

Tue, Jul 26 2005Comments (0) | Cinnamon

Got this email from Tammy Terwelp of Mint Boutique and had to share it. I know several of the vendors (including Tammy herself) have merchandise at Mint.

**
Hello all-

First I want to say "Thank-you" for supporting Mint in its first six weeks.  I couldn't do it without all of you.  Second, I am excited to announce that Mint will be featured on ABC Channel 7's "Best of Chicago" segment this Thursday the 28th at approximately 6:50AM.

I'll be live in the studio talking with Judy Hsu about how Mint got started, what the concept is and also present a small sampling of the artists in the store.

Tune in if you get a chance!

Don't forget about the Grand Opening celebration from 7pm-10pm on Saturday, August 6th at the store.  There will be food and a raffle for a smashing gift basket!!  Studio 9 is having a celebration that night as well, so come down and check out their entertainment.

I hope to see you there,

Tammy

Another upcoming show

Wed, Jul 20 2005Comments (0) | Amy

The Craftin' Outlaws show -- October 8 in Columbus, Ohio -- is still accepting applications. The show is being built by the mighty hands of Liz Rosino, proprietress of Lucky Kat Krafts and part of the 2004 DIY Trunk Show. Check it out!

Cinnamon will be making the trek to Columbus to participate in this show. It's located in the very cool arts district at an amazing venue that got way too much of Cinnamon's money when she went to Ohio State. She'd love to see you there.

DIY Trunk Show 2005 Vendors!

Sat, Jul 16 2005Comments (0) | Amy

We got about 180 applications for the 79 spots available in this year's DIY Trunk Show. But after a grueling selection process (seriously, it sucks to have to turn people down), we've made our choices.

We were shooting for a selection of crafters and artists representing creative talent, variety of wares, and homegrown Chicago goodness, with a handful of Milwaukee/Madison folks for good measure. We wanted to balance the show a little, too -- last year, we were pretty heavy on jewelry and knitting.

We also wanted to provide space and support for people who are just starting to sell their stuff in public. Twenty of our 79 vendors have never done a craft show before.

And, unlike Bono, we totally found what we were looking for. So without further ado, here are the vendors for the Third Annual DIY Trunk Show (in no particular order):

DIY influence

Fri, Jul 01 2005Comments (0) | Cinnamon

If you haven't yet heard of Tammy Terwelp's Mint boutique, then you might be interested in this article Chicago Magazine's Sales Check. Not only does Tammy get a great recommendation, she also manages to get in that several of the members in her shop have been in the DIY Trunk Show.

Amy and I have both been by and we give two very enthusiastic thumbs up for this new shop. Not only are her hours wonderful (from 4-9 most weekday evenings) for folks who work during the day, the products are absolutely fantastic. They're high quality, reasonably priced, and all are made by Chicago area crafters. She's turned down items from folks in New York and the west coast. And while she isn't expecting to get rich from doing this, it would be nice to see her succeed so head down and pick up a card, or a bar of soap, or a pair of earrings, or a handbag.
