Tax and business info

Mon, Aug 30 2004Comments (10) | Amy

This is the part of the show that’s a drag, but we all have to do it – filing for a business license and paying taxes (yes, even for a DIY-style craft fair). Note: There have been some changes since last year’s show on the tax forms you’ll need to submit as a vendor.

We all are required by law to file for a business license and pay sales tax.

I know its a groaner, but it is fairly simple to fill out the forms, and it is free.

First, go to the Illinois business tax website and print, fill out, and mail the REG-1 (formerly the NUC-1) and print or at least read the REG-1 Instructions. You're filing for an Illinois Business Tax number or IBT number. Here’s a handy FAQ.

You may be able to file online if their website recognizes your browser.

It can take about 3 weeks to get your number and your information so make sure you do it early enough.

Sales tax is paid when you file form ST-1 which can be downloaded in pdf form here.

You will also have to pay federal tax on a quarterly basis. This page has more information.

Since we won't have someone from the state collecting sales tax from vendors, and since we aren't responsible for collecting taxes (thank God!), we aren't going to be going around asking everyone to show their info. Y'all are adults and how you handle this is up to you. We're more than willing to put up links and other info as we come across it, but we're not experts and we're not tax lawyers and we're not accountants so please understand that our info could be wrong, and you should do your own research.

Another option: If you are not planning to do another craft fair after DIY or you don't want to start your own business, you can file what's known as a "first and final" return for your taxes after the DIY Trunk Show.

For example, last year I developed some new personal commitments (i.e., grad school) that take up too much of my time to try to run a jewelry business on the side right now. And I really didn't want to have to deal with the tax implications of starting a business that I don't have the energy to run. So the 2003 DIY Trunk Show was the only show I’ll be participating in for a long time.

If your situation is similar, you may want to get a "first and final" return, which requires you to get a Tax ID number but not a business licence.

(If you're not sure what you want to do with your crafty self in the future, or you think you'll do another show, you should probably just go ahead and get the business license just to be safe.)

Here's what you need for a "first and final" return:

First, fill out and submit the REG-1 form to get your Tax ID number.

Then, call the Illinois Department of Revenue's Business Hot Line (217-524-4772) and ask them to send you the "first and final" return forms. These forms are not available online.

After the show is over, complete and submit the "first and final" return before Dec. 20.

If you have any questions, the Business Hot Line people are very friendly and helpful.

If any of the seasoned craft-show veterans have any helpful tips for the newbies, please leave a comment.

New City article

Mon, Aug 23 2004Comments (0) | Amy

I had dinner tonight with a reporter for New City who's working on an article about Chicago's burgeoning DIY/alternative craft culture -- Venus, Renegade Craft Fair, DEPART-ment, Punk Planet, your humble DIY Trunk Show, etc. The writer is looking for a few more sources, so if you've got something you're dying to say about your work or DIY or whathaveyou, this could be your chance! E-mail me (rubberynun-at-hotmail-dot-com) and I'll put you in touch with her.

Update: OK, I got about 10 responses, which I forwarded to the writer, so I think we're all set. Thanks, everybody!

Our first press release

Fri, Aug 13 2004Comments (0) | Amy

Hey, everyone,

I sent these press releases out to various media outlets this week. Our goal is to stir up some advance interest in the show and see if it leads to an article or two. I'll be mailing out a different press release in October to get the DIY Trunk Show listed on all the event calendars. Any feedback y'all have would be most welcome.

--------

DIY TRUNK SHOW 2: ELECTRIC CRAFTALOO
SET FOR NOVEMBER 13

CHICAGO (August 9, 2004) – Chicago’s Pulaski Park Fieldhouse will be abuzz with the area’s finest alternative crafters and artists at the second annual DIY Trunk Show, November 13, 1419 W. Blackhawk, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Organizers (and crafters) Amy Carlton and Cinnamon Cooper say DIY Trunk Show 2: Electric Craftaloo will have nearly twice as many vendors as last year, plus a new workshop area for shoppers who want to learn how to make their own cool stuff.

Carlton, who makes beaded jewelry, and Cooper, a knitter and pursemaker, conceived the show last year as a way to showcase their own work and help out a few of their talented friends. It quickly exceeded the organizers’ goals, evolving into a daylong event for nearly 50 different vendors and hundreds of shoppers.

DIY Trunk Show 2 will feature even more of the same creative entrepreneurship that has made Chicago a hub of the burgeoning alternative craft scene. "This isn’t a church-basement kind of craft fair," says Cooper, who also sells her purses from her Web site, www.poise.cc. She notes that the one-of-a-kind and small-batch creations of the vendors include zines, graffiti art, "sushi" lip-gloss, bejeweled bra-straps, and even cross-stitched vibrator cozies.

Preserving the DIY (do-it-yourself) philosophy of the first show, Cooper and Carlton kept their admission prices low to encourage first-time vendors to join. "Neither of us had ever sold our work to the general public before we put the DIY Trunk Show together," says Carlton. "But having complete strangers buy and wear things we made was an amazing feeling. We want other novice crafters and artists to know what that’s like."

If you have received an email confirming that you were in and asking you to send in payment and photos and telling you how to do that, then you're in.

Trunk Show mini-survey

Tue, Aug 03 2004Comments (24) | Amy

In the next week or so, Cinnamon and I are going to be interviewed for a possible magazine article about this little project, and I'd like to get some demographic info about our fine, fine participants.

When we put the first DIY Trunk Show together last year, we were crafters who'd sold a few things to friends but never peddled our wares to the general public. For those of you who joined this year's Trunk Show, how many of you are craft fair virgins? And if this is your first show, what made you decide to take the plunge?

Note: sorry to those who weren't seeing their comments show up - they're fixed so comment away!
